When younger, I collected stamps. They came from all over the world. Some of the images are still etched on my mind. The stamps became my own tiny art museum as their compositions portrayed foreign leaders, wars, or flowers. They functioned as gateways to other places and times, as a particular stamp might represent a connection to an entire people who spoke a different language, listened to different music.

When I complete a painting, I feel as though I have stumbled upon something that came from somewhere else. I don't fully understand the origin of the image that I work to create. When I look at freshly finished work, I recognize a part of myself, but feel like a visitor, watching, curious as any other.
